A contractor, Prince Uzo Nwosu, has told a Customary Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Takushara, Abuja, why he had a sexual relationship with his family’s housemaid, an allegation at the centre of a messy marital dispute with his wife, Rebecca Erebi Nwosu.
Testifying before the three-member panel chaired by Hadiza Attah, Nwosu claimed he became involved with the maid because he was allegedly “sex-starved” by his wife, insisting the act was consensual and denying accusations of rape.
According to him, Rebecca allegedly only agreed to intimacy when she wanted to get pregnant, and after the birth of their second child, she continually denied him sex until she eventually left the matrimonial home.
Nwosu, who spoke as the fourth prosecution witness, also alleged that his wife frequently dismissed their housemaids at the slightest provocation, adding that she sacked 18 maids within four years. He said she often accused the domestic workers of sleeping with him and dismissed them without arranging replacements.
He further accused her of leaving their young children in the care of estate security guards when going out at night.
When asked about his wife’s accusation of rape, Nwosu insisted the relationship with the maid, identified as Mercy, was voluntary, adding that he even planned to marry her because of how well she cared for his children. He said he is a prince from Ohuhu in Umuahia North, Abia State, and that his custom permits men to marry multiple wives.
He denied claims that his son has autism, insisting the child only has delayed speech — a condition he claimed runs in his family.
In his petition marked FCT/JD/CC/TAK/CV/09/2025, Nwosu asked the court to dissolve the marriage, grant custody of their two young children to his parents, and allow Rebecca visitation rights. He claimed the marriage, conducted in May 2021, had “broken down irretrievably” and that they had been separated for over a year.
He also alleged that Rebecca was involved in “clubbing and promiscuity” and denied him access to the children.
In her response, Rebecca strongly denied marrying Nwosu under Igbo customary law, asserting that their union was conducted under Ijaw native law and custom in Bayelsa on 30 April 2021, and later blessed in church.
She portrayed herself as a dutiful wife and accused Nwosu of hiding his “true character,” which she said also led to his divorce from his former wife.
Rebecca alleged that the marriage collapsed after Nwosu raped and sexually assaulted their housemaid in July 2024 — an act she said brought shame and led to their separation following intervention from both families.
According to her, Nwosu confessed the assault to her, adding that criminal charges could not proceed because the victim lacked the financial means and Nwosu’s family allegedly paid her off.
She also said their children were unsafe with him, claiming he is a chain smoker who smokes around them, and that their son once picked up a cigarette butt in imitation.
Rebecca argued that she had always allowed him access to the children, denied being involved in clubbing or promiscuity, and insisted she was a hardworking, responsible mother.
She accused Nwosu and his family of attempting to control her life and said he forced her to abandon her thriving clothing business, leaving her financially dependent.
Rebecca is demanding full custody, child support, health insurance, and that Nwosu collect the ₦60,000 bride price in line with Ijaw custom. She also agreed the marriage should be dissolved.
The court fixed 20 November 2025 for ruling on the application.
