VIDEO: PDP Chairman, Turaki, Asks President Trump To Save Nigeria’s Democracy, Postpones NEC Meeting

Kabiru Turaki, national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called for intervention of Donald Trump, the U.S. President and other developed countries over Nigeria’s democracy.

Turaki also shifted the party inaugural national working committee (NWC) meeting earlier slated for Tuesday in Abuja.

Speaking to journalists after gaining access to the PDP headquarters at Wadata Plaza, Turaki said the decision was prompted by “actions of those undermining democracy and progress”.

He said the meeting would now hold on Wednesday, November 19.

Turaki, who was joined by Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo; and Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi; commended the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) commissioner of police for providing security that enabled the leadership access the secretariat.

He said he had briefed the commissioner about the planned NWC meeting and informed him of “flyers circulating on social media” announcing NEC and BoT meetings by persons no longer recognised as party members.

He said the police kept their word by ensuring the party leaders could enter the premises to address journalists.

Turaki thanked party stakeholders for their support, saying the PDP remains committed to unity and stability.

He said governors, national assembly members, former governors, ex-ministers, BoT members, state chairmen and members of the immediate past NWC had shown solidarity by accompanying him to the secretariat.

He said the PDP is focused on restoring its strength and must first secure national cohesion to return to power.

The postponement comes amid a leadership crisis that has split the PDP into factions, with Turaki’s camp asserting legitimacy after the expulsion of Samuel Anyanwu, former national secretary.

The PDP headquarters was the theatre of chaos on Tuesday as supporters of both factions clashed over access to the Wadata Plaza complex.
