The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has issued a strong warning to the United States over calls by Dr. Ebenezer Obadare, Senior Fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations, urging Washington to pressure President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to outlaw Shari’ah law and the hisbah in Nigeria.
In a statement on Thursday, December 4, 2025, MURIC Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, described Obadare’s call as “crossing the red line” and warned that any interference with Nigeria’s Islamic legal system could alienate Nigerian Muslims and jeopardize the fight against terrorism.
“Obadare’s call is mischievous, reactionary, and outlandish. It is undemocratic, neocolonial, and imperialistic,” Akintola said. “Shari’ah is the Muslims’ way of life. It cannot be separated from Islam. The moment anyone attempts to touch our Shari’ah, we begin to see him seeking to eliminate Islam in its totality. Our advice is this: don’t go there. It is the red line.”
Obadare reportedly made the call during a joint House briefing in response to US President Donald Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern.” MURIC questioned the true intentions of the United States, asking whether it is genuinely fighting terrorism or targeting Islam.
The statement highlighted that Shari’ah and the hisbah are legally and constitutionally entrenched, reflecting the choice of the Nigerian people, and that any attempt to outlaw them would betray democratic values:
“The greatest challenge our government will face when it starts tampering with Shari’ah is that it will lose the support of liberal and mainstream Muslims who have been opposing the terrorists. Ditto for the hisbah… Any attempt to tie the Shari’ah to the war against terrorism will cost both the US and the Nigerian government the cooperation of Nigerian Muslims in all spheres.”
MURIC further criticized Nigerian Christians who opposed Shari’ah through the democratic process but, according to the group, are now seeking foreign intervention to abolish it:
“Obadare’s approach is not only cowardly, it is immoral and despicable… Something terrible has gone wrong the moment a government starts tampering with the Constitution to favour a minority group.”
The organization concluded with a stern warning that Nigerian Muslims will continue to support President Tinubu in combating terrorism, but any government or foreign attempt to outlaw Shari’ah will change the story dramatically.
