US: I’ll Get Impeached If We Don’t Win Midterm Elections — Trump Tells Republicans

United States President, Donald Trump, has warned House Republicans that failure to secure victory in the 2026 midterm elections could lead to his impeachment by Democrats.

Speaking on Tuesday at a retreat with Republican lawmakers in Washington, Trump said the party must hold on to its narrow control of the House to protect his presidency and advance his agenda.

“You gotta win the midterms ‘cause, if we don’t win the midterms, it’s just gonna be – I mean, they’ll find a reason to impeach me,” Trump told Republican lawmakers at a retreat in Washington. “I’ll get impeached.”

With the November elections approaching, Trump pressed lawmakers to set aside internal divisions and actively promote his policies on gender issues, healthcare and election integrity to voters frustrated by rising living costs.

“They say that when you win the presidency, you lose the midterm,” Trump said. “I wish you could explain to me what the hell’s going on with the mind of the public.”

The president’s remarks come amid growing calls for him to refocus on domestic priorities, particularly inflation and prices, following a controversial military Operation targeting Venezuela’s leader, Nicolas Maduro. Trump largely avoided detailed discussion of economic pressures, instead blaming Democrats for inflation and urging Republicans to campaign on strong U.S. stock market performance.

He also made only passing reference to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, as Democrats marked the fifth anniversary by accusing Republicans of attempting to downplay the события.

The meeting took place at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, which Trump reshaped last year by removing Democratic appointees from its board. In December, the remaining trustees voted to rename the centre to include Trump’s name alongside that of former President John F. Kennedy.

During an unscripted 84-minute speech, Trump shared personal anecdotes, including comments about advice from his wife to stop dancing in public.

He also repeated several inaccurate claims, including that Washington had recorded no homicides in seven months, despite police data showing a murder on New Year’s Eve and 127 homicides in 2025.

Trump expressed confidence that Republicans would defy historical trends and achieve what he described as an “epic midterm victory,” while criticising party members he said were not sufficiently aligned with his agenda.

All seats in the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate will be contested in November, with sitting presidents historically losing House seats in midterm elections since 2006.
