A U.S. Border Patrol agent was shot and killed during a traffic stop Monday in Coventry, Vermont, near the U.S. border with Canada, the agency said in a statement.
The incident was the first time since the 2010 slaying of Agent Brian Terry in Arizona that a Border Patrol agent was slain by an assailant, according to a memorial list of fallen officers compiled by support groups.
One suspect, a German national, is dead, and a second suspect, a U.S. citizen who suffered injuries, is in custody, according to a Department of Homeland Security official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to provide preliminary details.
The incident occurred about 20 miles south of the Canadian border along Interstate 91, Vermont State Police said.
Acting homeland security secretary Benjamine Huffman confirmed in a statement that an agent assigned to the Border Patrol’s Swanton sector was fatally shot in the line of duty.
“Every single day, our Border Patrol agents put themselves in harm’s way so that Americans and our homeland are safe and secure. My prayers and deepest condolences are with our department, the agent’s family, loved ones, and colleagues,” Huffman said.
“This incident is being swiftly investigated and DHS will release additional information as soon as it becomes available,” he said.
Vermont State Police referred questions to the FBI, which did not immediately respond to an email.
