Uproar As 24-Year-Old Man Dies In Police Custody

The Delta State Police Command has been accused of allegedly torturing a 24-year-old man, Paul Obukowho, to death.

This is as the Police Public Relations Officer of the state Command, SP Bright Edafe, said the deceased was not tortured and if the family feels there is any foul play, an autopsy is the last resort.

Speaking to PUNCH Online on Saturday, the Director General, Young Nigerian Rights Organisation, Mr Victor Ojei demanded a full-scale investigation into the demise of Obukowho, who allegedly lost his life “under highly questionable circumstances” involving officers of the Rapid Response Squad, of the Delta State Police Command.

It also demanded immediate suspension and prosecution of all officers responsible for the deceased’s death as well as compensation for the family of the deceased for the “unjust loss of their loved one.”

The rights activist, in a statement by it’s Lead Activist, Victor Ojei, alleged: “On the morning of Wednesday, March 26, 2025, Master Prosper Ejiro, 19, and Ejiro Obukowho, 22, both laundry workers, were on their way to work when they were stopped by officers of the RRS.

The officers detained Prosper Ejiro for wearing military camouflage shorts and subsequently demanded to be taken to his residence.

Ejiro Obukowho followed them on foot, as he was not allowed to enter the police vehicle.

“Upon arrival at their residence, the officers conducted a search but found nothing incriminating.

“Despite this, they detained Prosper Ejiro. Later that evening, at around 5:00 PM, Paul Obukowho and Ejiro visited the police station to facilitate Prosper’s release. However, upon arrival, Paul was also detained. Reports indicate that he was slapped, stomped on, and handcuffed simply for advocating for his brother’s release. His younger brother, Ejiro, was threatened and forced to leave the premises.”

The statement further alleged that “Paul was subjected to extreme physical abuse. Officers accused him of hitting their car when they arrived at his home and used this as an excuse to detain and torture him.

The following morning, while still in custody, Paul and Prosper were summoned by an officer identified as Shepherd, who informed them that Paul would be detained for five days. Paul was then subjected to further brutality. Three officers handcuffed him, beat him with wood on his knees, and used pepper spray on him.

“Prosper, who was forced out of the room, could hear Paul’s screams of God help me as the officers continued their assault,” he added.

The statement further alleged that by the time the bail was negotiated, “Paul had become completely unresponsive. He could no longer speak, stand, or even sit. A concerned junior officer attempted to assist by giving him glucose, but Paul vomited immediately. This officer, realising the gravity of the situation, urged Prosper to contact his mother to expedite the bail process.

The statement said the deceased was taken to several hospitals and eventually passed away on Saturday at about 4. am.

When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer of the State Command, SP Bright Edafe said, “That boy was suffering from low sugar. It was unfortunate that he was in the custody of RRS when the attack came.

We took him to the police clinic; we took him to the Specialist Hospital before he died at the Federal Medical Centre this morning.

“However, if the family feels there is any foul play, as usual, an autopsy is the last resort.”
