At least four schoolchildren have been killed with several others sustaining different degrees of injuries after a truck conveying building materials lost control and ram into pedestrians on Monday in Egbolo, Igalamela-Odolu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
According to an eye witness, the students were said to be on their way from Egbolo to the neighbouring community of Ofuloko, where they attend secondary school, before the tragedy struck.
Some of the injured children have been rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
The early Monday morning accident, which sparked outrage and grief across the community led distraught villagers to barricade the Idah road.
The youth leader of the community Usman Idrisu while speaking on the unfortunate incident said the community despite its population does not have a primary school.
He lamented that their children have to trek a long distance to Ofuloko community to enable them get access to basic education.
Idrisu who described the incident as black Monday in Egbolo community, said the accident occurred around 8am when a truck carrying building materials ferried some of the pupils to drop them at Ofuloko primary school, but was involved in an accident leading to the death of four children, with many sustaining various degree of injuries.
He appealed to the state governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo to consider the population of the community and establish a primary school in the community.
āThe truck ould not climb the hill after it crossed the bridge and rolled backward before plunging into the river.
āWe are seriously grieved in Egbolo community for the death of four of our children who died in the cause of seeking education.
āAs it is now, many of them that sustained injuries have been rushed to a hospital in Idah town. This incident could have been averted if only there is a primary school in our community.
āThat is why we are earnestly appealing to Kogi state government to come to our aid by giving us a primary school so that our children will not be facing long distance before they can acquireĀ primary school education.ā
