A 30-year-old man has died after entering a well to retrieve a burning gas cylinder in Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday by its Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi.
According to the statement, the Emergency Response Unit received a distress call on Sunday reporting a rescue incident at Saulawa Quarters in Gwarzo town.
The Gwarzo Fire Service branch was immediately mobilised after a resident, Alhaji Dan Gwarzo, reported that a man had entered a well during an emergency situation.
“The victim, identified as Ashahabu Ubale, aged about 30 years, entered the well in an attempt to retrieve a burning gas cylinder that had been thrown inside,” the statement said.
It explained that during the process, the gas cylinder opened and released gas, displacing oxygen inside the well and causing suffocation.
Fire service personnel rescued the victim from the well unconscious, but he was later confirmed dead.
The body was subsequently handed over to a police officer, PC Muhammad Zakiyyu, of the Gwarzo Police Division.
The Kano State Fire Service expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and cautioned residents against entering wells or confined spaces without proper safety measures.
It urged members of the public to observe safety precautions around open wells and other hazardous areas, warning that such incidents could be fatal.
