President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
The meeting, held at 10 Downing Street, formed a major part of Tinubu’s ongoing state visit and culminated in the signing of a £746 million export finance agreement aimed at modernising key maritime infrastructure in Nigeria.
Under the arrangement, UK Export Finance will support the rehabilitation of two of Nigeria’s most important ports — the Lagos Port Complex and the Tin Can Island Port Complex — in what officials described as a significant step towards boosting trade capacity and improving transport infrastructure.
According to reports, the discussions between the two leaders also covered broader areas of cooperation, including trade, investment, defence, and cultural partnerships, with several memoranda of understanding expected to follow. The engagement was widely seen as part of Nigeria’s effort to attract foreign investment and deepen strategic ties with the UK.
Earlier in the visit, Tinubu and the First Lady were received by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle as part of the official state visit — the first Nigerian state visit to the UK in decades.
The Nigerian delegation to the talks included senior government officials and security chiefs, underscoring the strategic nature of the trip, which is expected to strengthen economic cooperation, expand trade opportunities, and enhance bilateral relations between both countries.
