Tinubu Makes Education Accessible, Affordable Through NELFUND – Asefon 

The Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu, Hon. Asefon Sunday Dayo has revealed that education now became accessible and affordable to many students in the country.

Asefon disclosed this during Renewed Hope student leaders engagement at Port Harcourt, Rivers state.

Addressing the student leaders, Asefon said the launch of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has made education accessible and affordable.

He furthered that the initiative has significantly reduced the number of students dropping out of tertiary institutions every year.

The address reads in full:

AT THE RENEWED HOPE STUDENT LEADERS ENGAGEMENT – PORT HARCOURT, RIVERS STATE

Distinguished guests, esteemed stakeholders in the education sector, respected student leaders from across the South-South region, Representative of sole Administrator Rivers State, Representative of minister of Education, Representative of minister of Youth Development, Representative of minister of science and Technology and MD/CEO NELFUND, Vice Chancellor University of Port Harcourt, ladies and gentlemen,

It is with great honour and a deep sense of responsibility that I welcome you to this landmark event. The Renewed Hope Student Leaders Engagement here in the warm and hospitable city of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

This gathering is not just another routine meeting. It is a deliberate and strategic initiative to strengthen the bridge between government and students, close communication gaps, and create a vibrant platform where campus leaders can interact directly with policymakers and key stakeholders in the education and youth sector.

Our mission is clear to engage student leaders meaningfully, inform them about the far-reaching reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in education and youth development, and hear from them directly. By doing this, we work towards building a more inclusive, impactful, and prosperous future for Nigerian students.
The Renewed Hope Student Leaders Engagement is proudly organized by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Students Engagement in partnership with the Rivers State Government.

I must specially appreciate our President, His Excellency Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, a leader who understands that education is the foundation of national development. Under his Renewed Hope Agenda, bold and transformative initiatives have been rolled out:

The launch of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to make education accessible and affordable. Also, the scheme whish has significantly reduced the number of students dropping out of tertiary institutions every year.

Just, this Monday, the President approves the allocation of Funds to 15 school bot college of Education, polytechnic and University to create innovation hubs and entrepreneurship center, to provide core labs/ workstation to cover electronic Lab, 3D printing Lab Leser Technology Lab, production Design lab, Robotics and coding, Artificial intelligence, among others.

Increased funding for tertiary institutions.

Total attention to digital and vocational skills training for young Nigerians.

Renewable energy projects lighting up our campuses.

Rehabilitation of medical schools.

The introduction of the Students Industrial Work Experience. Grant provides for both financial support and practical exposure to students.

These reforms rekindle hope, proving that this administration listens, cares, and takes action.

Yet, we know there are still opportunities students are not tapping into in various MDAs and Ministries not because they do not exist but, because awareness is low. This is why we are here today. To hand over the key to you. We want you to return to your campuses not just as representatives but as informed ambassadors of the Renewed Hope Agenda. You are expected to share this knowledge, inspire your peers, and ensure every student regardless of background or location benefits from these opportunities.

Let me also stress: this is a two-way engagement. We are here to listen. Your experiences, concerns, and ideas will inform policies and reforms. Your voices will shape the future.

I cannot close without appreciating Vice Admiral (Rtd.) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, Sole Administrator of Rivers State, whose unwavering support made this event possible. Not only did he approve that Rivers State host this programme, but he also provided logistics support to ensure its success. His passion for youth empowerment and education is commendable, and we are grateful.
