Taking Hot Foods And Hot Drinks Can Increase Your Risk Of Cancer; Here’s What You Should Know

There’s something undeniably comforting about a steaming cup of tea or coffee, especially on a chilly morning.

For many, the hotter, the better. But before you pour that next scalding-hot cup, it’s worth considering what science has to say about the potential health risks of drinking beverages that are too hot.

According to a studypublished in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition, there is a link between consumption of extremely hot beverages and an increased risk of esophageal cancer.

While your beloved tea or coffee isn’t inherently harmful, the temperature at which you consume it could have long-term implications for your health.

Why Is Consuming Extremely Hot Beverage Not Healthy?

When you sip on a piping-hot drink, the delicate lining of your oesophagus bears the brunt of that heat. This tube, connecting your mouth to your stomach, is lined with sensitive tissues designed to handle food and drinks at moderate temperatures. Hence, consuming beverages that are too hot can cause repeated damage to these tissues.

Dr Shrey Kumar Srivastav, Senior Consultant, Sharda Hospital – Noida, explained to Onlymyhealth and shared, “Over time, this damage may lead to chronic inflammation and cellular changes in the oesophagus.

These alterations, when persistent, can even increase the likelihood of cancer developing in the area.”

It’s About the Temperature, Not the Drink

Adding to that, Dr Srivastav highlighted that it’s crucial to distinguish that it’s not the tea, coffee, or soup that poses the risk—it’s the scalding temperature.

“Beverages served at or above 65°C (149°F) have been identified as a potential concern,” he said. So, that soothing herbal tea or energising espresso isn’t the villain here; the problem arises when you consume it before it cools down to a safer temperature.

How To Protect Your Oesophagus

If you’re a fan of hot drinks, there’s no need to abandon your favourite ritual entirely. Instead, consider these simple doctor-approved tips to reduce the risk:

Wait a few minutes! Let your tea or coffee cool for a few minutes before taking that first sip
Before diving in, test your drink with a cautious sip to ensure it’s warm, not scalding

Use insulated mugs to help maintain a moderate temperature without overheating your drink

If you’re in a hurry, add a splash of milk or cool water to your hot beverage to bring down the temperature quickly.

Bottomline
Your morning routine doesn’t have to be a hazard to your health. By simply letting your drink cool to a more comfortable temperature, you can protect your oesophagus and continue to enjoy the beverages you love.
