A Paris court has revoked a surgeon’s license and sentenced him to 15 months in prison following the 2019 death of billionaire Ehud Arye Laniado during cosmetic surgery.
Laniado, a 65-year-old Belgian-Israeli diamond trader, died of a heart attack while undergoing a penile enlargement procedure at a private Paris clinic.
The court also sentenced another surgeon who was present on the night of the operation to 12 months in prison, according to media reports.
Both surgeons were permanently barred from practicing medicine and ordered to pay fines of €50,000 and €20,000 respectively.
The operation was carried out late at night, outside regular hours, and emergency services were not immediately contacted despite the patient’s complaints of abdominal pain.
Laniado, owner of Omega Diamonds, was known as one of the world’s leading experts in valuing rough diamonds and frequently visited the Paris clinic for costly procedures.
An initial investigation into involuntary manslaughter had earlier cleared the clinic’s director and surgeon, but the case was later revisited by judicial authorities.
The ruling underscores growing concerns over patient safety, emergency response failures, and accountability in high-risk cosmetic procedures performed in private clinics.
