A soldier attached to the 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, Rukuba Barracks, Jos, has allegedly stabbed a 26-year-old tricycle rider, Abdullahi Muhammad, to death near the barracks gate.
The tragic incident occurred at Gebu-Bassa around 7 p.m. when the victim, who was also a herder, stopped to purchase an item near the barracks gate.
According to Garba Abdullahi, Chairman of the Gan Allah Fulani Development Association (GAFDAN), an altercation began after the victim accidentally stepped on the soldier’s foot while reversing his tricycle.
“The deceased apologised after the incident,” Abdullahi explained. “However, the soldier, who was in mufti, slapped him, leading to a heated exchange. The soldier then pulled out a jackknife and stabbed Abdullahi in the chest. He was rushed to the clinic within the barracks but was later pronounced dead.”
Abdullahi condemned the killing and urged the Nigerian Army to ensure justice for the deceased. He noted that the soldier was immediately apprehended by his colleagues, who initially mistook him for a civilian before discovering his identity.
The father of the deceased, Alhaji Muhammad, also called for justice, urging the army leadership to hold the perpetrator accountable.
The spokesman of the 3 Division, Lt. Col. Aliyu Danja, confirmed the incident, expressing condolences to the victim’s family.
“Preliminary reports indicate that an altercation between the soldier and Mr. Abdullahi escalated, leading to the unfortunate stabbing,” Danja stated. “Despite efforts at our medical facilities, the victim succumbed to his injuries.
“In response to this tragic event, the soldier has been arrested, and an investigation is underway to determine the root cause of the incident.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to transparency and accountability. If the soldier is found guilty of wrongdoing, he will face disciplinary action in line with military regulations,” Danja added.
