Sharia: Couple Flogged 100 Times Each For Engaging In Sex Outside Marriage

In the conservative Indonesian province of Aceh, a young couple paid a steep price for their love.

They were publicly flogged 100 times each for engaging in sex outside of marriage, a brutal punishment under the region’s strict Sharia law.

According to reports, the couple received the lashings with a rattan stick in sets of 10, with medical services on standby.

The female suspect was flogged by a woman. Both of them were flogged by masked members of the Sharia police.

Mail Online quoted Banda Aceh Mayor Illiza Sa’aduddin Djamal to have defended the punishment, saying, “Today we are carrying out flogging punishment for perpetrators of adultery, alcohol consumption, and online gambling.

“This becomes a moral lesson for the community at large. This flogging punishment becomes a gateway to repentance for them.”

The public flogging was witnessed by a small crowd at a park in Banda Aceh, with the couple grimacing in pain as they received the lashings. The scene was a stark reminder of the strict laws enforced in the region.

However, rights groups have condemned the punishment as draconian. Despite this, caning retains strong support among Aceh’s population as a common punishment for various offences, including gambling, drinking alcohol, and adultery.

Aceh is the only region in Indonesia that practises Sharia law, and public floggings are a regular occurrence. In February, two men were publicly flogged over 150 times for engaging in sexual relations.

Indonesia banned sex outside of marriage in its latest criminal code in 2022, but the law will not come into force until next year. The region’s use of Sharia law dates back to 2001, when it was granted special autonomy in an attempt to quell a long-running separatist insurgency.

The public flogging has sparked controversy, with many questioning the effectiveness of such punishments in promoting morality. Critics argue that such punishments are inhumane and violate human rights.

In addition to the couple, three other suspects were caned a combined 49 times for alleged gambling and alcohol consumption. The punishments were carried out in accordance with Sharia law, which is strictly enforced in the region.

The region’s strict laws have been criticised for targeting vulnerable groups, including women and minority communities.

Despite the controversy, the Aceh government remains committed to enforcing Sharia law. The region’s leaders argue that the law is necessary to promote morality and order, and to protect the community from what they see as immoral behaviour.
