Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has dismissed the widespread public backlash surrounding her interaction with Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, at a recent event, branding the reactions a “needless controversy.”
The comments, posted on her Facebook page on Tuesday, mark the First Lady’s first public response since a video of the incident went viral days earlier.
The video, captured at the 10th coronation anniversary of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, showed the First Lady interrupting Governor Adeleke while he was singing before delivering his speech.
Mrs. Tinubu, who was installed as the Yeye Asiwaju Gbogbo Ilé Oodù’a at the event, walked to the podium, gestured to the governor, and whispered to him, an exchange interpreted by many critics as a public reprimand or a show of disrespect towards an elected governor.
In her statement, Mrs. Tinubu appeared to caution critics against magnifying minor events. She wrote:
“Those entrusted with leadership understand their duties and how to steer the affairs of society. More often, it is the followers and critics who scrutinise every step, amplify minor missteps, and turn them into needless controversy. Ọṣun lè tèǹtẹ̀ – Osun is ahead.”
The episode has generated significant debate online, with opinions divided on whether the First Lady overstepped protocol.
Critics, including Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, condemned the action as “bullying” and “disrespectful” toward a sitting governor.
