Russia’s Vladimir Putin is ramping up the number of hypersonic missiles amid fears of WW3. Tensions in the Middle East are continuing to rise after Iran struck American military bases in Qatar on Monday (June 23). It came after America dropped six “bunker buster” bombs into its nuclear facilities over the weekend.
Now, with the prospect of an all-out regional war looking more likely, other nations are beginning to take stock of their arsenal. Now, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has confirmed his country is upping its production of sophisticated missiles in case of an attack.
In a press conference, Putin confirmed that Russia would be stepping up the number of Oreshnik hypersonic missiles it would be producing. These missiles – which are believed to be intermediate-range – were first used when Russia barraged Ukraine with a fleet of the warheads back in November.
Comments made by the President said that the missile had “proven itself very well in combat conditions”, according to Reuters. “Serial production of the latest Oreshnik medium-range missile system is under way,” he said.
Oreshnik missiles – also known as Hazel tree missiles – were first used by Russia in its ongoing war with Ukraine during a series of strikes on November 21, 2024. The arsenal was used to target a defence building in the central city of Dnipro, causing major damage to the edifice.
At the time, Putin said he had given the green light to the strike after Ukraine began to use ballistic missiles that had been made by the US, shortly before then-President Joe Biden left office. He also blamed British forces for allowing Kyiv to use cruise missiles made in the UK in order to strike Russian targets.
In retaliation for the allowance of Western-made missiles to be used in the war, Putin threatened to hit “decision-making centres” in Ukraine’s capital, as well as a host of other strikes across the country. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has continued to use ammunition provided by the West as part of its war effort, only angering Russia further.
Intermediate-range missiles – such as the Oreshnik – can strike targets up to 5,500 kilometers, or 3,415 miles – away. Should Moscow decide to use them, the missiles could strike anywhere in Europe, or on the western coast of the United States.
In a previous press conference, Putin had boasted that the Oreshnik was “impossible to intercept”, and can do as much damage to buildings and targets as nuclear weapon. However, military analysts have contested these claims.
One month after they were first used on the battlefield, a US official dismissed Putin’s claims they were game-changers. Instead, the senior staff member said that the warhead was “experimental” by the Russians, and that the Kremlin were overcompensating for the number of missiles they actually had.
Moscow went on to say that it would be deploying Oreshnik missiles to its neighbour Belarus, which shares a border with NATO members Poland, Latvia and Lithuania. These missiles would be deployed, ready to use in the second half of this year.
