Police Debunk Herdsmen Attack Video In Ogun, Send Message To Residents

The Ogun State Police Command has reassured residents of Ajebo community in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area that there is no imminent threat of attack following a viral video circulating on social media suggesting that herdsmen were preparing to unleash violence on the host community.

The spokesperson of the state police command, CSP Omolola Odutola, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Friday.

Responding to the viral video, the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, reportedly deployed the Command’s tactical team, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), to assess the security situation in the area.

Odutola said other security agencies that were part of the team visiting the community included the Amotekun Corps, So-Safe Corps, local hunters, the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, as well as the Police Community Relations Committee.

She explained: “The operatives discovered that the Fulani settlers in Ajebo are not hostile migrants but long-standing residents, living peacefully within the community. Children and women were seen in their temporary shelters, but no arms or suspicious activities were detected.

“No adult male was present. The men had travelled to Oyo State for trading activities, which is consistent with their routine economic pattern. A further sweep of the settlement revealed an extended RUGA location that has reportedly been in existence for over ten years.”

Odutola added that the traditional ruler of the community, Oba Rueben Oluwole, who reportedly authorised the allocation of land to the settlers, has been invited for clarification.

Additionally, the Baale of Alapako, where another cluster of Fulani huts was identified, has also been invited for a meeting with the Commissioner of Police.

She stated: “The combined team of security agencies is maintaining surveillance within the forest area, approximately 10km from the main community. Their presence is strictly precautionary, as the settlers were found to be unarmed and living peacefully.”

The command reassured members of the public that proactive intelligence measures remain fully in place and advised citizens to remain calm, vigilant, and avoid sharing unverified information capable of inciting fear.

The police reassurances come amid broader concerns over farmer-herder conflicts in Nigeria, which have often erupted over land, grazing, and migration issues.

Environmental pressures in northern states, including desertification, have historically contributed to Fulani herders migrating southwards, where competition for arable land has occasionally led to clashes with host communities.
