Peter Obi Visits Malami In Abuja After Release From Custody

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), on Tuesday visited Abubakar Malami, former attorney-general of the federation (AGF) and minister of justice, in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Obi was accompanied by other chieftains of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) during the visit to Malami’s residence.

ADC Vanguard, a support group of the ADC, posted the picture of the visit via X.

“BREAKING: HE Peter Obi visits Abubakar Malami SAN to express support over his recent experiences with the EFCC, DSS, and subsequent bail by the Federal High Court FCT,” ADC Vanguard wrote.

The visit comes 24 hours after the former AGF was released from custody after a court granted him bail.

On February 27, a federal high court in Abuja granted bail to Malami and his son, Abdulaziz, in the sum of N200 million each over alleged terrorism-related offences.

Malami and his son were arraigned on February 3 on a five-count charge bordering on alleged terrorism financing and illegal possession of firearms.

The Department of State Services (DSS) accused the former minister of refusing to prosecute terrorism financiers whose case files were reportedly forwarded to the office of the attorney-general for prosecution while he was in the office.

According to the charge sheet, he was alleged to have “knowingly abetted terrorism financing” by declining to initiate prosecution against the suspects, contrary to section 26(2) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

The former AGF was arrested by DSS operatives at the front of Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja on January 19 after he was released in a case filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The EFCC had arraigned Malami, his son and wife, over allegations bordering on money laundering to the tune of N8,713,923,759.49.

The former AGF is standing trial on two separate criminal charges.
