PDP, LP Failed As Opposition Party; They Should Join Coalition To Unseat Tinubu – ADC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP), have failed Nigerians as opposition political parties, prompting its decision to step forward as the “next hope” for Nigerians.

In a brief statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, the ADC declared that it has taken the mantle to provide Nigerians with a credible opposition and prevent what it described as the “impunity and reelection” of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“The PDP and Labour Party have failed as opposition political parties,” the post read.

“That is why the ADC has stepped forward to give Nigerians hope and to stand firmly against the impunity and reelection of Bola Tinubu’s government.

“Anyone opposing this coalition is, whether knowingly or not, enabling Bola Tinubu’s re-election,” the party warned.

The ADC’s remarks come amid growing efforts to forge a new political front ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Recall that top opposition leaders adopted the ADC as their new political platform for the launched coalition and nominated former Senate President David Mark as the party’s pro tem national chairman and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as pro tem national secretary.

Prominent leaders in the coalition include former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former All Progressives Congress National Chairman John Oyegun, former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

Others include former Cross River Governor Liyel Imoke, and former House Speaker and ex-Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal and influential political figures like Kashim Imam and other senior stakeholders from across the political spectrum.

Since President Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023, opposition parties have faced internal divisions, leadership crises, and accusations of collusion with the ruling APC.

The PDP has been embroiled in factional battles and legal disputes in several states, while the Labour Party has struggled with questions over party structure, finances, and electoral strategy following its 2023 presidential outing with Obi.

In contrast, the ADC said it has positioned itself as an alternative force seeking to unify disillusioned voters and marginalised political voices.

Party leaders have previously expressed frustration at what they describe as the “compromised silence” of other opposition parties in the face of rising hardship, insecurity, and allegations of authoritarianism under Tinubu’s rule.

Political observers say the ADC’s strong rhetoric may resonate with a section of the electorate disenchanted with mainstream parties, though questions remain about its national structure and electoral strength.

As political realignments begin to take shape ahead of 2027, the ADC’s coalition is becoming a test of the willingness of opposition actors to set aside egos and ideological differences for a common front.
