PDP BoT Disowns Reconciliation Committee Report, Insists Convention Begins Today

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has distanced itself from the report by a reconciliation committee on resolving the lingering crisis in the party, and the conduct of a peaceful national convention.

The committee, chaired by Ambassador Hassan Adamu, was inaugurated on November 5, 2025, following directives from the BoT.

Afterwards, a report presentation was held in Abuja on Thursday, where the committee recommended an all-inclusive caretaker committee to resolve the issues plaguing the party.

The reconciliation committee stated that the move has become necessary because a convention that will not be accepted by all members will render the party incapable of fielding candidates at all levels nationally.

Since the national convention was announced, some members of the party loyal to the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, insisted that some issues, including the conduct of congresses, be resolved.

The development has led to the factionalisation of the party, with Ambassador Umar Damagum and Abdulrahman Muhammed heading the two factions of the party.

While the Damagum group insisted on the convention, the Abdulrahman camp canceled the convention following the judgment of the Abuja Federal High Court.

According to reports, the reconciliation committee recommended that going ahead with the convention must be subject to a favourable legal status and disposition of INEC.

The committee said, “Considering the multiple court orders and judgments, INEC is not likely going to monitor the Convention. Accordingly, an all-inclusive Care Takers Committee (CTC) is recommended because a failed convention will incapacitate the tenability of the party to field candidates at all levels nationally.”

They also said that the suspension orders should be lifted and all parties brought together for genuine reconciliation, among others.

However, a statement signed by Chairman, PDP Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara, on Friday, said the conclusion of the committee does not represent its official position.

The BoT also insisted on proceeding with the national convention slated for Saturday and Sunday, despite an order by Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja, stopping the Party from proceeding with its 2025 national convention scheduled for Ibadan, Oyo State.

“The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) hereby categorically dissociates and distances itself from the purported Report of the BoT Reconciliation Committee being circulated in some sections of the media.

“The BoT states in clear terms that the content of the said Report is not and does not represent the official position of the Board. Having not been considered or adopted by the BoT, it cannot in any form or guise whatsoever be regarded as the position of the BoT.

“The BoT is unwavering in its endorsement of the conduct of the elective National Convention as scheduled on Saturday, 15th to Sunday, 16th November, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, for the purpose of electing a new set of leaders to pilot the affairs of the Party in the next four years. This position is guided by the Judgment of the Supreme Court, which reaffirmed the supremacy of a political party in the conduct of its internal affairs.

“In that regard, the BoT rejects any suggestion for a Caretaker Committee for the Party. Such an idea cannot be contemplated as the Board and, of course, the PDP, have irreversibly decided on an elective National Convention which is within the scope of the internal affairs of the party to which the courts have no jurisdiction.

“The BoT therefore urges Party members to remain committed and focused on the success of the Elective National Convention”, the statement said.

After the Federal High Court’s judgment, the Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan on Friday, adjourned ruling on a preliminary objection challenging its jurisdiction in the suit filed by a member of the PDP, Folahan Adelabi, over the party’s national convention.

At the hearing on Friday, counsel for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), O. Adeyemi, argued that INEC, being a Federal Government agency, was only subject to the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court.

He urged the court to strike out the case for lack of jurisdiction.

However, counsel to the claimant, Musibau Adetumbi, SAN, opposed the objection, stating that the argument infringed on the claimant’s fundamental rights.

He said the 1999 Constitution guaranteed the right to lawful assembly and convention.

Quoting Section 251 of the Constitution, Adetumbi contended that INEC did not fall within the category of agencies that place the case exclusively before the Federal High Court.

He asked the court to dismiss the objection and proceed with the substantive suit.

After listening to both sides, the presiding judge, Justice Ladiran Akintola, adjourned the ruling to December 8, 2025.

He also reaffirmed that the interim order earlier granted, which restrained the defendants from disrupting or interfering with preparations for the PDP national convention, remained in force.

The defendants in the suit are the PDP (first defendant), its acting National Chairman, Umar Damagun (second defendant), and the Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, who chairs the PDP Convention Organising Committee (third defendant). INEC is the fourth defendant.

Recall that the same court had extended its interim order restraining any interference with the planned convention until further hearing, ensuring that the event proceeds as scheduled.
