Oyo Students Write Gov Makinde, Raise Alarm Over Persistent Police Misconduct

Oyo state students has written to Governor Seyi Makinde over alleged misconduct by officers of Nigeria Police Force, Oyo state command.

In an open letter sighted by GISTSMATE MEDIA, the students alleged that the officers are harassing, arresting, verbally and physically abusing young people.

The letter reads:
AN OPEN LETTER TO THE EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF OYO STATE ON POLICE MISCONDUCT

Your Excellency,
The Executive Governor of Oyo State,
Ibadan,
Oyo State.

Your Excellency,

We write to you as student leaders and representatives of the young people to draw your attention to the troubling experiences many people and residents of Oyo State continue to face in the hands of Tactical Units and Area Command’s of the Nigeria Police Force within the state.

While we acknowledge and respect the important responsibility of law enforcement to maintain peace and security, experiences reported by students and residents reveal a growing pattern of harassment, intimidation, and indiscriminate arrests targeted at young people.

In many instances, young people are stopped, arrested, verbally abused, and many times physically assaulted. Phones are searched, and where nothing incriminating is found, victims are sometimes threatened with false allegations such as cultism or drug-related offences. In some cases, officers insist on accompanying individuals to their homes for searches that follow no clear procedure.

Even more disturbing are reports of forced entry into residences, physical assault, and degrading treatment of Oyo State residents. These encounters frequently end with victims feeling compelled to part with whatever interest they brought in, as to avoid further humiliation or non-understandable detention.

Your Excellency, these experiences are gradually creating fear among residents and particularly among students. Oyo State has long enjoyed a reputation as a centre of learning and a welcoming environment for young people. Unfortunately, the persistence of these incidents is beginning to damage that reputation.

Today, many young people speak openly about their fear of harassment. Some residents are already considering relocating to other states, while prospective students seeking admission into institutions within Oyo State are beginning to look elsewhere out of concern for their safety and dignity.

As student leaders, we believe strongly that security must never come at the expense of citizens’ rights and dignity. Law enforcement must remain professional, disciplined, and accountable to the people it is meant to protect.

In light of these concerns, we respectfully but firmly call for the following:

1. That all tactical teams of the Nigeria Police Force operating in Oyo State be directed to strictly operate within the mandate and responsibility of their respective units and stop forcing entry to people properties hiding under “they are working on information”. That Area Command should stop the usage of using mini bus to be arresting people all around without clear and just reasons.

2. That the indiscriminate arrest of young people by every units of police under the general suspicion of internet fraud be immediately discouraged.

3. That acts of harassment, intimidation, physical assault, and forced entry into private residences be decisively addressed.

4. That clear measures be put in place to ensure professionalism, accountability, and respect for the rights of citizens.

Your Excellency, our position is not one of hostility toward law enforcement. Rather, it is a call for responsible policing that protects both security and the dignity of the people.

The students and young people of Oyo State believe in your leadership and your commitment to justice, fairness, and the welfare of the people. We therefore hope that this matter will receive urgent attention so that Oyo State can continue to stand proudly as a safe and welcoming environment for learning, innovation, and growth.

This letter represents the collective voice of concerned students who seek not confrontation, but reform, accountability, and a policing culture that truly reflects the values of a democratic society.

Yours faithfully

*Signed*
