Oyo Emerges Most Preferred State For Relocation In Nigeria – Report

Oyo State has emerged as the most preferred destination for Nigerians looking to relocate within the country, according to fresh data from the State Performance Index (NGF 2025) released by Statisense.

The ranking, which highlights the top 12 states most attractive for relocation, places Oyo ahead of Akwa Ibom, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kwara, and Osun, which make up the top five. Rivers, Plateau, Cross River, Ogun, Kaduna, Kano, and Gombe complete the list.

The index cited cost of living, infrastructure, opportunities for business and employment, and general living conditions. Oyo’s capital, Ibadan, has particularly stood out for offering residents of the city life at a lower cost compared to Lagos and Abuja.

This finding aligns with recent reports from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which listed Oyo among Nigeria’s cheapest states to live in 2025. The state recorded an inflation rate of 18.7%, with food prices even dropping by 7% in the last month — a rare trend across the country.

Akwa Ibom, ranked second, also enjoys a reputation for affordability despite being oil-rich, while the FCT continues to attract people seeking government-related opportunities and modern infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Lagos State recorded an inflation rate of 20.2% in May 2025 compared to 22.7% recorded in April. Its food inflation rate stood at 15.1% for the same month, compared to 20% in April 2025, ranked tenth on the list of most affordable States to live in a May 2025 ranking by the NBS.

The NBS data shows that Lagos recorded a month-on-month decline in food inflation at -2.7% and 4.4% increase for all items for the period under review.

In recent months, the Lagos State Government has implemented key anti-inflationary measures, including the announcement of a 25% reduction in transport services for the State Public Transport system (the Bus Rapid Transit, Train, and Ferry) in February.

To curb food inflation, the Governor of the state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced the establishment of Sunday Markets across 42 identified markets across the state to sell food items at affordable rates.

The plan, according to the governor, is to serve over 500,000 Lagosians with essential food items at rates that defy inflation.
