Outrage After Customs Operatives Shoot Dead Driver In Osun

Outrage erupted in parts of Osun State on Sunday after operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service allegedly shot dead a motorist at Onibueja, Ido‑Osun, along the Osogbo–Iwo road.

A video obtained by our correspondent showed the vehicle riddled with bullets at the scene near a police roadblock.

Eyewitnesses said the victim, who was driving from the Iwo end toward Osogbo at about 10:00 a.m., was shot when plainclothes security operatives opened fire on his car. He reportedly died at the wheel.

A resident who gave his name only as Sunday said local people rushed to the scene and demanded a probe to establish who was responsible.

“The man was driving towards Osogbo from Iwo when some security operatives in mufti shot at his vehicle. He died right there on the wheel,” he said.

He adding that those who fired were not in uniform and residents were angry and shocked.

Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident, saying that the shooters were Customs operatives.

“The incident happened but those that allegedly fired the shot are Customs operatives. We have arrested two people in connection with the incident,” Ojelabi said. He assured that he would brief the press with further details shortly.

Local residents have called for a transparent investigation and for the identities of the perpetrators to be revealed.

There was no immediate information on the identity of the deceased, any motive for the shooting, or whether he was a commuter or hired driver.

Attempts to obtain an immediate reaction from the Nigeria Customs Service were not successful at the time of filing this report. The police said additional updates would be provided as the investigation proceeded.

Ojelabi said, “The Osun State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that, two officers of the Nigeria Customs Service have been arrested in connection with a shooting incident that occurred today 15th march 2026 at Dada Estate area of Osogbo.

‎”The suspects, identified as Kolawole Suuti “M” and Danjuma Samuel “M”, were reportedly chasing suspected tokunbo (foreign-used) vehicles when the incident occurred.

“Following the report, police operatives swiftly responded and apprehended the two officers, meanwhile, the driver of the said ash colour Toyota corolla one of the vehicle been chased by the customs was shoot and confirmed dead by a medical doctor in Osun state university teaching hospital and his corps has been deposited at the morgue, although the name of the victim (deceased) is yet unknown.

“During the operation, the following items were recovered from the scene of incident: “one Beretta pistol with breech number 125024; eleven rounds of 9mm live ammunition; one expanded shell of 9mm; one white Toyota Corolla with registration number AAA 400 GQ (Lagos), and one ash Toyota Corolla with registration number GFQ 0982 (Texas)

“The suspects are currently in police custody and the Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command, CP Ibrahim Gotan, has ordered a thorough investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident,” Ojelabi said.
