Olayinka Naomi: Meet 16-Year-Old Nigeria’s World Champion In English

Olayinka Naomi, a 16-year-old Nigerian prodigy from Chrisland High School in Ikeja, Lagos, has made headlines by clinching the Top in the World accolade in English as a Second Language at the 2024 Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examinations.

Why This Matters for Nigeria
This remarkable achievement, announced in early November 2025, positions her as the global standout among thousands of candidates worldwide, highlighting Nigeria’s rising talent in academic excellence.

A Legacy of Excellence at Chrisland Schools
Naomi’s success isn’t a one-off; it builds on her school’s storied tradition. Just last year, in 2023, another Chrisland alumna, Mmesomachukwu Okonkwo from the Victoria Garden City (VGC) campus, earned the same prestigious title in English.

Chrisland’s Director of Schools, Mrs Ayoola Akinyeye, praised Naomi as an “inspirational school leader,” crediting the institution’s culture of discipline, faith, and mentorship for fostering such globally competitive students.

The school boasts a broader track record, including 96% of its 2024 WASSCE graduates achieving all distinctions and dominance in national sports competitions.

Her Journey: Discipline, Passion, and Perseverance
As assembly prefect, Naomi balanced leadership duties with rigorous academics, a feat that honed her time management skills. She described her preparation as a blend of structured practice—honing essays with teacher feedback—and leisurely reading of novels, articles, and newspapers to build vocabulary and comprehension.

English, for her, is more than a subject; it’s a tool for “fostering human connection” and advocating for justice. Challenges arose, like juggling multiple subjects and the pressure of expectations, but she persevered by taking “one step at a time,” leaning on faith, family, and mentors.

In a moment of elation upon hearing the results, Naomi was left “momentarily speechless,” expressing profound gratitude to God, her teachers, parents, and supporters.

Why This Matters for Nigeria
Naomi’s triumph underscores the potential of Nigerian youth in international arenas, especially in a subject like English where non-native speakers often face steeper odds. It’s a beacon for aspiring students, proving that with consistent effort and a supportive environment, world-class results are within reach. As she eyes the future, Naomi aims to use her voice for positive change, building fairer communities.
