Ohanaeze Begs Tinubu To Grant Amnesty To 1,335 Repented Biafra Agitators

Ahead of the June 12 Democracy Day celebration, the apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to grant amnesty to 1,335 repentant, nonviolent pro-Biafra agitators.

Ohanaeze stated that granting amnesty to these individuals would not only position President Tinubu as a hero of Nigeria’s democracy but also secure his legacy as a leader who courageously addressed the long-standing Biafra agitation and broader concerns affecting the Igbo people.

In a statement on Wednesday, the National Deputy President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, emphasised that the call for amnesty stems from the voluntary decision of the 1,335 individuals to renounce agitation and seek peaceful engagement with the Federal Government.

He said the initiative would provide hope for others who may have been misled into violent methods under the guise of Biafra agitation, encouraging them to embrace peace and reintegration.

Isiguzoro noted that none of the repentant groups have been proscribed or banned by any level of government and that their willingness to dialogue marks a historic moment in Nigeria’s post-civil war era.

“For the first time since the end of the Biafra war 55 years ago, we are witnessing a coalition of repentant, nonviolent pro-Biafra groups ready to engage in constructive dialogue with the Federal Government,” he said.

“In a significant and historic move, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, in the spirit of democracy and national unity, urgently conveys a momentous appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government of Nigeria.

“This plea is driven by the decision of 1,335 repentant nonviolent pro-Biafra agitators from various groups—none of which have been proscribed—who, after careful reflection, are now willing to pursue constructive engagement and peace.

“If certain critical issues are addressed, they have pledged to surrender, declare their allegiance to the Federal Government, and publicly support President Tinubu’s administration as part of this year’s Democracy Day celebrations.”

Ohanaeze further revealed that the initiative followed 16 months of intense advocacy and negotiation, involving Igbo leaders and international humanitarian organizations, to convince the agitators to embrace peaceful dialogue.

“The outcome of these efforts is a willingness by these individuals to voluntarily pledge allegiance in exchange for Presidential amnesty, a peaceful resolution of Southeast insecurity, the dismissal of all legal charges against them, and the release of detained Igbo prisoners of conscience.”

Ohanaeze stated that the June 12 celebration offers a rare and symbolic opportunity for President Tinubu to address unresolved grievances and historical injustices faced by the Old Eastern Region and the Igbo people.

The group urged Tinubu to host a closed-door session with the repentant agitators, listen to their grievances, accept their pledges, and grant them the long-sought Presidential pardon.
