Ogun Adire Traders Slam Gov Adeleke Over Theft Remark

Producers and sellers of the locally made fabric, Adire, in Itoku Market, Abeokuta, Ogun State, have faulted Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, for claiming that the Egba people stole the craft from their forebears.

The traders frowned on what they described as Adeleke’s futile attempt to rewrite history.

They also berated the governor for calling them thieves and warned that he should withdraw the statement and tender an unreserved apology.

The Iyaloja of Kemta Adire/Kampala Market, Itoku, Chief Somodale Akamo, made the demands while addressing journalists on Thursday.

A viral video had shown Adeleke, while receiving the Chief of Staff to the President, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, saying that the locally made fabric, Adire, was originally from Osun State but was stolen by the Egba people.

Adeleke, in the video, said Adire was from Osun and started from his hometown, Ede before it later spread to Osogbo.

When interjected by Gbajabiamila that Adire is from Ogun State, Adeleke replied, β€œThey stole it.”

Kicking against the statement, Akamo held that it was not only insulting but a direct attack against the resilient Egba people known globally to have pioneered the age-long artistry serving as a veritable source of livelihood to hundreds of thousands of people globally.

β€œWe are no doubt shocked by the statement credited to the Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, that Adire (tie and dye) is originally from Osun State and that the Egba people stole it.

β€œWe reject this offensive and insulting statement because Egba people are a set of noble and hardworking people.

β€œThe truth is that Adire is from Egba land. It is the craft and trade that our forebears had been doing as far back as the 13th century.

β€œThe trade became popular and prosperous when the Egba came to the present day Abeokuta in 1830 and the second Iyalode of Egba land, Madam Jojoyinola, did a lot to empower many people in the trade, causing Adire to go global.”

She described as false the claim that the Egba people stole the craft from Osun and asked the governor to withdraw the statement and tender an apology.
