The Ofokutu Royal Dynasty and the Ijesha People have taken legal action against Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke over the installation of Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup as the Owa Obokun of Ijeshaland.
The matter, which has been in court for a while, saw its first hearing before Justice Aderibigbe of the Osun State High Court, Ilesa Division.
The judge adjourned the case to March 6 for further proceedings.
The Chairman of Ofokutu royal family, Prince Adebanji Obembe, outrightly criticised the selection process.
The criticism was not inconnnected with the inherent injustice the whole process, how can the same Justice A .A. Aderibigbe of Osun State High Court who granted an interim order of injunction to the Ofokutu Royal Family vide an exparte motion on the 12th of December 2024,also purportedly grant another exparte motion on 13th of December, to vacate that which he granted on the 12th Dec, 2024.
Worst still, Governor Ademola Adeleke went on to install the King on Sunday 29th December 2024. Mean while, in the legal system, you don’t vacate an ex-parte injunction granted with another ex-parte motion. This is not only an aberration and illegality, but may also lend credence to such, though largely unproven, insinuation of the likes of a recently charged legal practitioner and other concerned citizens have been accused of the system.
In practice, to vacate an ex-parte injunction, all parties will be invited to the court to argue this.
We must all rise up to defend the glory of our father, enough of all these flagrant ways of the ruling people.
It shall stop on you by the special grace of the Almighty God.
Following the passing of the previous monarch, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran, who reigned for 42 years, during the coronation ceremony, Adeleke urged Haastrup to act as a “father of all” and to use his wealth of experience for the development of Ijeshaland
“It’s the turn of the Ofokutus to provide a candidate for the Owa as the other ruling house had reigned in the past,” he said.
“But sadly, the Haastrup family, who had ruled twice in the past, illegally hijacked the throne, using the state apparatus.”
Princess Oluwatoyin Faloye, Nee Obembe, also expressed utter dissatisfaction, saying, “The state requested that each contestant get a form worth #10 million to contest for the throne. I challenge Adesuyi Haastrup to get into the room known as ‘Ipebi’ for traditional rites if he knows he is qualified.”
The Ofokutu family affirmed that the state ignored a court injunction and proceeded with Haastrup’s installation, accusing the government of politicising the kingship.
The Ofokutu family remains resolute, insisting that the process undermined traditional customs and justice.
Our tradition and culture are being assaulted and eroded on all fronts, no thanks to some politicians and some of the custodians of our culture.
No wonder, our value systems and morals which were built on these norms have diminished substantially.
Ijesha people are saying that since Governor Adeleke has used kangaroo and “padipadi” as a means to install the king, we do not want a king who sits at every occasion, always with his chair beside him, we need a king who is active and up and doing.
A king who can travel far and wide, make prudent moves and decisions in the interest of his people. Ijesha people need a capable and an agile king who can embark on progressive and productive itineraries, not sit at a spot.
A king who can inculcate and represent the interest of his people and *foster* new development and innovation in his community.
As we all know, Ile Ife land is well known because Oba of Ife is active and travels around to deliberate with top officials for the benefit of his land.
That is the kind of historical and iconic figure we desire to have as a king.
