NYSC Mourns Death Of Female Corps Member In Ogun

 

The management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding her demise.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the Scheme described the incident as tragic and extended condolences to the family of the deceased, praying for the peaceful repose of her soul.

NYSC also confirmed that one of its staff members is under investigation in connection with the incident, noting that the individual has been taken into custody by relevant security agencies.

ā€œThe Scheme is aware of the reports circulating in the media concerning the suspected involvement of a staff member.

ā€œWe wish to confirm that the matter is currently under investigation, and the individual concerned has been taken into custody,ā€ the statement said.

The corps emphasised its commitment to discipline, stressing that it maintains a strict code of conduct for both staff and corps members and will not tolerate any form of misconduct or abuse of office.

According to the statement, NYSC is cooperating fully with law enforcement authorities to ensure that the truth is uncovered and justice served, while urging the public to avoid speculation as investigations are ongoing.

Recall that the Ogun State Police Command had launched an investigation into the death of Ariyo, who was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area.

Reports indicate that Ariyo allegedly died from complications arising from an abortion procedure. Her remains were said to have been buried at Kobape Cemetery along the Kobape-Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.

It was further gathered that an NYSC official, allegedly involved in a romantic relationship with the late Ariyo which reportedly led to the pregnancy and subsequent abortion, has been picked up by the police for questioning.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the incident, saying ā€œI can confirm that the case of the demise of Victoria Ariyo is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Departmentā€.

The NYSC reiterated that the welfare, safety, and dignity of corps members remain a top priority, assuring the public that it will continue to support efforts to ensure accountability in the matter.
