Supporters of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), have proposed a joint presidential ticket pairing Peter Obi and Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 general election.
The proposal was announced on Friday in Kano by Abba Sadauki Gwale, who spoke on behalf of several Kwankwaso support groups. He said the idea reflects the desire of their supporters to back a political alliance that can address Nigeria’s growing insecurity and economic hardship.
According to Gwale, the Obi–Kwankwaso ticket could run on any political platform, stressing that public opinion is shifting and Nigerians are eager for change.
He said Nigerians are tired of insecurity, hunger, and widespread poverty, and believe the two leaders have the capacity to improve the country if given the opportunity.
Gwale explained that the proposed alliance aims to combine Peter Obi’s strong support base in the South with Kwankwaso’s large following in the North. He said this could produce a broad national coalition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He added that both Obi and Kwankwaso share similar views on governance, with a strong focus on improving the welfare of ordinary Nigerians. According to him, their message of hope, reform, and accountability is gaining support across the country.
Gwale dismissed reports suggesting that Kwankwaso is planning to defect to the APC, describing such claims as false and misleading. He said Kwankwaso’s political decisions are guided by the interests of his supporters nationwide.
He also stated that Kwankwaso continues to enjoy strong grassroots support in Kano State and other parts of the country, despite recent political developments.
As preparations for the 2027 elections continue, Gwale said many Nigerians are watching closely to see whether the Obi–Kwankwaso alliance will turn growing public support into electoral success.
