North Korea Backs Iran’s New Supreme Leader, Knocks US, Israel

North Korea has shown support for Iran’s appointment of a new supreme leader, condemning the United States and Israel for actions it says are “destroying the regional peace and security foundations and escalating instability worldwide”.

State media in Pyongyang on Wednesday highlighted the country’s respect for the Iranian people’s decision to name Mojtaba Khamenei as successor to his father, Ali Khamenei, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike on February 28.

“We respect the rights and choice of the Iranian people to elect their supreme leader,” an unnamed North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesperson told the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The official accused Washington and Tel Aviv of undermining stability, violating Iran’s sovereignty, and attempting to overthrow its political system.

Pyongyang has long opposed US-Israeli interventions in the Middle East, previously denouncing attacks on Iran as “illegal acts of aggression.”

The spokesperson accused Israel and Washington of trying to “overthrow its social system” and undermining Iran’s “political system and territorial integrity.”

According to the official, such acts “deserve worldwide criticism and rejection as they can never be tolerated.”

Recently, Kim Jong Un indicated that the two countries could “get along” if the United States recognised North Korea’s nuclear status, despite earlier overtures from President Donald Trump to revive high-level talks.

On the same day, North Korean state media reported that Kim oversaw another test-firing of strategic cruise missiles from the naval Choe Hyon destroyer, part of efforts to “arm the Navy with nuclear weapons.”

Images released showed Kim monitoring the launch via video with his teenage daughter, Ju Ae, who is increasingly seen as his potential successor.

Kim emphasised the expansion of a “powerful and reliable nuclear war deterrent” and noted “important successes” in deploying strategic and tactical strike capabilities.

Former University of North Korea Studies president Yang Moo-jin told AFP that North Korea seems to be “securing the legitimacy and justification for bolstering war deterrence.”

The North is highlighting the joint US-South Korea drills “as not merely defensive and routine, but ultimately attempts at a preemptive war” in light of the Iranian conflict.”
