Olanrewaju Omiyinka, the Nigerian actor popularly known as Baba Ijesha, has reportedly been released from prison.
Yomi Fabiyi, another actor and a friend of Baba Ijesha, broke the news on Instagram, revealing that he regained his freedom on Friday.
Fabiyi added that his colleague was released after an appeal court overturned his conviction for the sexual assault of a minor, following over three years in custody.
“You are now officially FREE AND OUT. Baba Ijesha is not just back but BETTER,” he wrote.
“I am also happy you were cleared by the APPEAL COURT of ever having sex/defile any child/minor. The 7-year-old story is a charade. We live in a terrible world, where sentiments and wickedness rise above the rule of law and truth.”
Our correspondent has not been able to independently verify the reports of Baba Ijesha’s release from prison.
Baba Ijesha was arraigned on June 24, 2021, on a six-count charge of indecent treatment of a child, sexual assault, attempted sexual assault by penetration, and sexual assault by penetration..
On July 14, 2022, a Lagos high court sentenced the actor to 16 years imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor.
His 16-year jail term was expected to run concurrently, meaning that the actor spent five years behind bars.
In April 2024, Baba Ijesha challenged his jail term, arguing that he was set up and was merely “acting according to a script” provided by a colleague.
