No Plans For Foreign Military Base In Nigeria – DHQ

The Defence Headquarters has said there are no plans to establish any foreign military base in the country.

This clarification follows lingering speculations that the military collaboration between Nigeria and the United States was aimed at establishing a US base in the country.

Speaking during a Twitter Space organised by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, the Director of Defence Information, S. M. Uba, explained that the military relationship between the Nigerian Armed Forces and the United States Army did not involve the establishment of a US military base in Nigeria.

He said the partnership was based on bilateral military cooperation focused on professional training, operational capacity building and intelligence sharing aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security capabilities.

According to him, Nigeria maintained similar defence partnerships with several other countries as part of efforts to improve military professionalism and enhance its ability to address security challenges, including terrorism, insurgency, banditry and transnational crimes.

“The partnership between Nigeria and the United States does not imply the establishment of a United States military base in Nigeria.

“The collaboration is purely based on bilateral military cooperation focused on professional training, operational capacity building, and intelligence sharing to strengthen Nigeria’s security capabilities. Such cooperation is not unique to the United States alone.

“Nigeria maintains similar defence partnerships with several other countries as part of its broader strategy to improve military professionalism and enhance its ability to address contemporary security challenges, including terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and transnational crimes,” Uba said.

He noted that the engagements included joint military training exercises, exchange of strategic intelligence, technical cooperation and knowledge sharing between defence institutions.

He said the programmes were designed to enable the Nigerian military adopt global best practices and improve operational efficiency in protecting the country’s territorial integrity.

The defence spokesperson added that all international military collaborations involving Nigeria were conducted with full respect for the country’s sovereignty and national interest.

He reiterated that there were no plans to establish any foreign military base in Nigeria.

In his remarks, Dare said the President Bola Tinubu administration remained committed to strengthening Nigeria’s defence and security architecture through strategic international partnerships that would support capacity building and modernisation of the armed forces.
