Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has said that many Nigerians are already living in “hell” due to persistent government failures, and should not have to experience it again after life on earth.
Speaking on Rubbin’ Minds, a Channels Television programme hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Sowore urged Nigerians to embrace political action and push for a better future, rather than merely holding on to hope.
“You must embrace the reality and fight for the future that can give you hope. And hope is not enough. It must be about the progress you want to see,” Sowore said during the interview.
He criticised the notion of passive endurance, saying, “There’s no country in the world where people just hang on to hope. Those are for people who want to go to a different planet called heaven. Even for those who want to go to heaven, the prescription to go to heaven requires that you fight for the reality here.”
Describing the lived reality of Nigerians, Sowore remarked: “A world that allows you to have a breathing space, to have progress, to make some kind of, you know, a living time out here that is not hell. So, it is the reason why I often say – today is Sunday – that I don’t think Nigerians will go to hell because we’ve already been in hell for so long now. There’s no point sending us back there.”
When asked whether he would run for president again in the 2027 elections, Sowore declined to make an official announcement but hinted at a possible return.
“I knew you wanted to ask the question, so we’ll have to come back on your show again when we’re ready.”
Pressed further about whether it was too early to talk politics, the activist replied, “What I do and breathe and talk about is politics. That’s why you were saying earlier that people think, oh, maybe I’m always negative. I’ve provided the best solution so far, including on this show.”
He concluded by urging Nigerians to tune into the right voices and ideas, saying, “I think people must now start turning to the right channels to listen to ideas instead of ideals that don’t work.”
