Nigerian Troops, Airstrikes ‘Suyanize’ 61 ISWAP Fighters, Foil Drone Attack In Borno

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai, in collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), have neutralised no fewer than 61 suspected ISWAP terrorists during a failed infiltration attempt on a military formation in Borno State.

The insurgents launched the attack in the early hours of Wednesday on Malam Fatori in Abadam Local Government Area, targeting troops at the 68 Battalion location, reports said.

According to military sources, the terrorists advanced on foot from the Duguri axis and deployed armed drones in what was described as a desperate attempt to breach the military base.

However, the attack was repelled following what officials described as coordinated and overwhelming firepower from both ground troops and air components.

“The attack, which came through the frontage of Bravo Company from the Duguri general area, was met with superior coordination between ground forces and air assets,” one of the sources said.

The troops, backed by precision air strikes, reportedly engaged the insurgents in a fierce gun battle, inflicting heavy casualties on them.

Military sources said the integration of air and ground operations played a decisive role in the outcome of the encounter.

“Our forces executed four highly effective air interdiction strikes on identified enemy concentrations, decimating their fighting capability,” a source disclosed.

“The synergy between air and land forces denied the terrorists freedom of movement and forced a disorderly withdrawal towards the Arege general area after suffering heavy casualties.”

Additional support was also provided by allied air components from the Niger Republic, which conducted strike operations against the fleeing insurgents. However, battle damage assessments from those strikes were still ongoing as of the time of filing this report.

“The allied forces from neighbouring Niger Republic also conducted rapid strike passes in support of the operation, thereby compounding the pressure on the fleeing insurgents,” the source added.

Despite the intensity of the clash, military authorities confirmed that only four soldiers sustained minor injuries during the operation. The injured personnel have since been stabilised.

The latest confrontation highlights the continued efforts by Nigerian military forces under Operation Hadin Kai to counter insurgent activities in the North-East, particularly in border communities prone to cross-border attacks by extremist groups.

Malam Fatori, located near Nigeria’s border with Niger, has remained a strategic but vulnerable area in the ongoing fight against insurgency in the Lake Chad region.
