The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has released a list of 75 officials for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) but has excluded Nigerian referees, despite the country’s recent improvements in officiating at national and international levels.
The CHAN tournament, reserved for players active in domestic leagues, is scheduled to be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The shortlist comprises 26 referees, 26 assistant referees, 18 video match officials, and five instructors selected from across the continent.
Morocco leads with the highest number of representatives—seven officials covering all officiating categories. Veteran referee Mohammed Guezzaz from Morocco will head the team of instructors, alongside Jammy Sikazwe (Zambia), Evarist Menkouande (Cameroon), Mohamed Hussein Ali (Djibouti), and Boubaker Hannachi (Tunisia).
Algeria, which has refused to field a team for the tournament, also secured multiple officiating slots, with five referees included. Cameroon and co-host Uganda each contributed four officials, while South Africa has three.
A regional breakdown shows 20 of the selected officials are from North Africa and another 20 from West Africa. Despite this West African representation, no Nigerian official made the list.
CAF noted that the appointments reflect the increasing quality of refereeing across Africa, with selections made to ensure the highest standards at the championship.
The tournament, taking place in August, will be held across five stadia in four cities and will serve as a preparatory event for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which the same host nations will also jointly stage.
