NAUS Oyo Kicks Against Expulsion Of Three UI Students, Makes Demands

RE: CALL FOR WITHDRAWAL OF SANCTION AND CASES AGAINST THREE STUDENTS – ADUWO AYODELE (228839), NICE LINUS (230317), AND MIDE GBADEGESIN (193374)

The leadership of the National Association of University Students (NAUS), Campus Monitoring Committee, Oyo State Chapter, writes to formally express deep concern and displeasure over the continuous disciplinary actions and arraignment of three students of your prestigious institution: Aduwo Ayodele (228839), Nice Linus (230317), and Mide Gbadegesin (193374) who engaged in a peaceful protest against the hike in school fees on May 13th, 2024.

It is important to clearly state that these students did not indulge in any form of violence, destruction of school property, or incitement. Their action, as gathered, was peaceful and conducted with placards – a non-violent expression of dissent and a fundamental right protected under Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) which guarantees the right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

We must also remind the institution that universities remain spaces for intellectual engagement and democratic practice, where students are encouraged to think critically, raise concerns, and stand up for their rights in non-violent ways. Subjecting these students to repeated disciplinary panels for exercising this right is not only unfair but sends a dangerous message to others on campus that peaceful civic engagement is a punishable offense.

Therefore, NAUS CMC Oyo State hereby demands the following:

1. Immediate withdrawal of all disciplinary cases and pending sanctions against the above-mentioned students.

2. That the students be allowed to continue their academic activities without any form of victimization, witch-hunt, or psychological harassment.

3. That the university management reaffirms its commitment to protecting student rights in accordance with national laws and international democratic standards.

We remain committed to ensuring students across all campuses in Oyo State are safe, free, and treated with justice and fairness. We urge the University of Ibadan to handle this matter with the same spirit of fairness that the institution is known for.
