NAUS Demands Heavy Punishment For Reckless Truck Drivers As Tipper Kill 3 Lagos Students

The National Association of University Students has called for severe punishment for truck drivers who drive carelessly on Nigerian highways.

The call is coming amidst the tragic passing of three students of Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).

GISTSMATE MEDIA earlier reported that a fatal road accident in Lagos claimed the lives of three students of LASUSTECH, while seven others sustained various degrees of injuries.

The accident, which occurred early Saturday morning at the Powerline Junction, near Aleje, inward Ikorodu Roundabout, involved Toyota Corolla (SMK 42 AJ), an MPV Bus, and four tricycles.

According to eyewitnesses, a tipper truck travelling at high speed reportedly suffered a brake failure, resulting in the incident.

The vehicle veered into other road users, colliding with several vehicles and tricycles in its path, leading to multiple fatalities and severe injuries.

Reacting to the sad development, NAUS Senate President, Comrade Oguntade Israel said the incident is sadonic and makes yet another sad day in Nigerian students history.

He said, “while we are still grieving on the recent crushing of a female student at LAUTECH Iseyin Campus, another catastrophy has struck us.

“The University students have not forgotten the tragedy that struck AAUA, Akungba, Ondo state. The multiple truck accidents are calls for immediate proactive and capital punishment for reckless drivers, especially heavy duty drivers. The government must do something vital to stopped these wicked souls cutting short the lives of Nigeria’s future.

“NAUS sends condolences to the family, the management of LASUSTECH, the Students Union, and colleagues of the departed souls. May the souls of our departed students rest in perfect peace. May God console their families and the school.

NAUS also promised to get justice for the late students. Comr. Oguntade said, ‘the association also promised to work with the management, the SUG, and all relevant authorities to ensure justice is served. This is another tragedy too many to bear.”
