The Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Committee (JCC) Oyo State, Comrade Tiamiyu Taiwo Ademola, recently embarked on a visitation tour to several tertiary institutions in the state.
The tour, which was aimed at addressing the concerns of students, took the NANS JCC Chairman to the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, College of Agriculture, Iseyin campus, Oyo State College of Education, Lanlate, and Oyo State College of Agriculture Technology, Igboora.
Addressing Challenges at LAUTECH College of Agriculture, Iseyin Campus
During the visit to LAUTECH College of Agriculture, Iseyin campus, the students expressed their concerns about the lack of practical classes, laboratories, and animal pens. They also lamented the high cost of accommodation and the challenges of transportation. The management attributed the delay in commencing practical classes to the impending relocation of the second batch of the Faculty of Agriculture from the main campus to Iseyin. They assured the students that everything would be in place by January.
Committee Established to Address Accommodation Challenges
A committee, headed by the Deputy Provost, an indigene of Iseyin, was established to facilitate a meeting with the Aseyin of Iseyin and house owners to address the accommodation challenges. The school management also promised to look into the transportation issues and seek government assistance.
Campus Monitoring Committee Set Up
Before departing, NANS set up a campus monitoring committee to oversee the establishment of practical training grounds and assist in coordinating meetings between the management and Iseyin citizens. Regular follow-ups would be conducted to ensure the successful implementation of these initiatives.
Supporting Oyo State College of Education, Lanlate
During the visit to Oyo State College of Education, Lanlate, the challenges facing the institution were discussed. These included inadequate infrastructure and low student enrollment. NANS pledged to support the college in appealing to the government for funds to facilitate smooth operations. Additionally, NANS urged the government to utilize increased school fees to enhance the learning environment.
Addressing Concerns at Oyo State College of Agriculture Technology, Igboora
At Oyo State College of Agriculture Technology, Igboora, the challenges included limited resources, inability to accredit certain courses, and inadequate practical apparatus. NANS promised to engage with the relevant authorities to address these concerns and ensure that students receive comprehensive practical training in agriculture. NANS also advised the school management to improve their internally generated revenue, particularly by venturing into agricultural production.
Resolution of Suspended Students’ Issue
The issue of the seven suspended students was raised, and NANS appealed to the management to reconsider their decision. The management promised to provide feedback once the Rector, who was away on an official assignment, returned. The Rector, who joined the meeting via phone call, assured NANS that he would reach out after the meeting.
This visitation underscores NANS’ commitment to advocating for students’ welfare and promoting quality education in Oyo State.
