The NBA Annual General Conference (AGC) Planning Committee has clarified that Rivers State did not pay hosting rights for the 2025 AGC in Port Harcourt.
Chairman Emeka Obegolu, SAN, explained that the decision to hold the conference in Port Harcourt was made in August 2024 without a bidding process.
Obegolu stated that the host city does not hold any inherent hosting rights. He added that the NBA never represented the conference as tied to a particular city. “The decision came through our internal process, not by payment or bidding,” he said.
The committee emphasized that hosting the AGC incurs enormous costs. To defray these expenses, the NBA AGC Planning Committee seeks support from various organizations, government agencies, and state governments.
Obegolu explained that financial support comes as gifts, partnerships, or sponsorships, and it carries no hosting rights. “Rivers State provided funds as a gift. There is no contractual hosting right attached to that money,” he asserted.
Recent NBA conferences have received support from diverse sources. State governments, corporate bodies, ministries, and agencies contribute through their corporate social responsibility budgets. These contributions help ensure that the AGC remains a world-class event for members of the Bar.
Obegolu stressed that the committee remains committed to delivering an exceptional conference. He warned that the committee would not let the issue become a source of unnecessary controversy. “We will focus on providing a high-quality conference experience and uphold our vision for a productive event,” he said.
The NBA AGC Planning Committee continues to work diligently to secure all necessary arrangements. The committee maintains that its decisions have always been guided by transparency and a commitment to excellence. Obegolu reassured stakeholders that all funds received support the overall success of the AGC.
The clarification by the committee seeks to settle any misunderstandings regarding the financial support from Rivers State.
