Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has adjourned a divorce suit brought before it by a man, Sule, against his wife, Balikis, whom he accused of irresponsibility, drunkenness and domestic violence.
Sule, who dragged his wife to court, said he gave her the sum of N50,000 to start a business but that she squandered it.
He also said that she shelved all her responsibilities towards him and their home.
According to Sule, the only thing Balikis knew to do was drink herself to stupor and wet the whole of their apartment with urine.
The plaintiff further said that any time he rebuked the defendant, she would go violent, lock the door to their apartment, and beat him to a pulp.
Sule stated that he came to court in order to avoid being killed by his wife.
The plaintiff, apart from divorce, sought for the custody of their only child in order to raise her properly.
He also requested an order restricting her from threatening and interfering with his private life.
Balikis agreed that they both go their different ways and that their wedlock be dissolved.
She, however, accused Sule of starvation.
She stated that he gave her only N200 per day for food, while he always kept foodstuff and soup in his room.
According to the defendant, the plaintiff is never ever satisfied with a woman.
Balikis stated that Sule had a harem full of women, but that he was always sending them packing after a few years of being married to them.
Sule, in his evidence, said, “My wife and I started living together as husband and wife after we met and courted for a few months.
“We did not hold a marriage ceremony; neither did I pay her bride price.
“In order that my wife was not idle, I gave her the sum of N50,000 to start a business, but Balikis, to my surprise, squandered it.
“She could not give an account till date of how she spent it.
“All our co-tenants and almost everyone in our neighbourhood know that she is drunk.
“My wife would go out without my consent and return home drunk.
“She misbehaves when in this state.
“She would lock me up in the room and descend on me with punches for daring to rebuke her.
“Balikis is in the habit of urinating all over our apartment and also in bed.
“Both the mattress and the whole apartment stink as a result of her urine.
“I came to court that it might separate us before she kills me as a result of her constant beating.
“I also request an order restraining her from threatening and interfering with my private life.”
Balikis responded, “I am ready to leave him.
“He once had many wives in his harem, but almost every one of them has left because of his maltreatment of them.
“He has been starving me since we got married.
“He hides foodstuff and soup in his room and gives me just N200 per day for food.
“I have been fending for myself because he cares less about my welfare.”
The court president, Mrs S.M., after she had heard both parties, adjourned the case for judgment.
