‘My Husband Beat Me Blue Black, Almost Ruined Me Just Because He Paid N3,000 As My Bride Price’

A woman, Ayisat has told Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State that she is no longer interested in her wedlock to her husband, Surajudeen, whom she stated was in the habit of beating her.

Ayisat stated that Surajudeen not only beat her but that he also broke into her room and carted away her belongings.

The plaintiff added that the defendant not satisfied, came to her shop to fight her and went away with her money and some of her goods.

Ayisat pleaded for their children’s custody and an order preventing her husband from threatening, fighting and interfering with her private life.

Surajudeen failed to make an appearance in court despite being served court summonses.

Ayisat in her evidence said: “My husband and I had a traditional wedding and he paid N3,000 as my bride price.

“We were initially based in Ilorin, Kwara State and our marriage is blessed with two children.

“My husband was callous and started beating me early in our marriage.

“He was fond of raising argument over trivial issues and would end up beating me, just because he paid a stipend as my bride price.

“I left him and relocated to Ibadan when I could no longer endure his maltreatment of me.

“My lord, my husband still came to my rented apartment in Ibadan to fight me. He also went away with my belongings.

“He came back a month later, broke the door of my apartment down, and went away with the remaining of my valuables.

“My lord, my husband not yet satisfied came to my shop last month to beat me up.

“He stole all the money I made that particular day, and also carted away some of my goods.

“My husband never wanted my progress and has succeeded in ruining me.

“I came to court so that an end would be put to our relationship and that he would be stopped from doing more harm to me.”

The president of the court, Mrs S.M Akintayo, after she had heard the plaintiff, adjourned the case and ordered that the defendant be issued and served a fresh hearing notice.
