Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has heard the evidence of a woman, Moriamo, who dragged her husband, Lere to court alleging that he was irresponsible, negligent of her welfare and that of their children, and is also in the habit of beating her and tearing her clothes to shreds.
Moriamo told the court that Lere shelved the responsibility of paying her hospital bills the two times she had their babies through cesarean operation.
According to her, it was her family members that raised the money and paid the fees.
She also said that he failed to pay their childās school fees.
Moriamo further added that the only thing Lere knew to do was to beat her.
The plaintiff stated that the defendant beat her not only at home but also at her workplace.
She pleaded for their childrenās custody but begged that her husband be made responsible for their upkeep.
Lere claimed not liable to all the allegations brought against him.
Moriamo, in her testimony, said, āMy lord, I pray that you dissolve my marriage to my husband.
āI gain nothing bearing his name. My experience married to him is that of woe.
āMy husband was never bothered about my welfare and that of our children.
āHe hardly gave us feeding allowance and was never concerned about our wellness.
āOur marriage is blessed with three children. I had two of them through cesarean operation, which cost quite an amount.
āMy husband did not pay a dime towards these operations.
āIt was my family members who rallied round me and gathered the sum to pay the fees on both occasions.
āHe is indifferent to our childrenās education.
āI enrolled every one of them in school and have always stayed on his neck to pay their school fees.
āHe now pays for two out of our three childrenās school fees.
āThe duty of paying the school fees of the last child has automatically become mine.
āMy husband shirked almost all the responsibilities he was supposed to bear as the breadwinner and made life tough for me.
āI worked from dawn to dusk to meet our childrenās needs.
āThe only thing my husband knew to do was beating me.
āHe would give me punches, not minding that our children were watching us.
āHe tore many of my clothes while beating me and would leave me stark naked.
āI have landed in the hospital on some ccasions and placed on admission after he beat me.
āRather than relent from his brutish way, he further came to my shop to fight me.
āI was forced to report at the police station on one occasion that he beat and almost killed me.
āMy lord, I have lost interest in my husband and our marriage.
āI pray that you dissolve our union and grant me custody of our children because he has no interest in them.
āI further plead that the court mandate him to be responsible for our childrenās upkeep.ā
The president of the court, Mrs S.M Akintayo, adjourned the case.
