The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has raised alarm over a security breach involving her personal email account, warning the public to disregard any messages sent from the compromised address.
Dabiri-Erewa disclosed the development in a statement shared on her official X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, describing the incident as a serious security issue.
“⚠️ Important Security Notice,” she wrote.
“Please be informed that my e mail account (aodabiri@yahoo.com) has been compromised by hackers. She urged members of the public, colleagues, and associates to exercise caution and avoid engaging with any suspicious communication linked to the account.
“Kindly ignore any emails purportedly sent from me using this or any other address until i regain full control of the account.”
The NiDCOM boss further noted that the breach may have disrupted her ability to respond to correspondence, revealing that a backlog of messages may have accumulated during the period of unauthorised access.
“I will unfortunately not be able to respond to the thousands of emails that must have accumulated during this period.”
“Thank you for your understanding.”
This is coming four days after The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) confirmed that three Nigerian nationals, who were recently stranded at a South African airport, had been cleared and had departed for Nigeria.
While welcoming the safe return of the citizens, NIDCOM expressed concern over the circumstances that led to the incident.
The Commission highlighted that a common factor in such cases is the reliance on unregulated visa agents. These agents often collect applicants’ passport information and complete key sections of visa applications, including purpose of visit, travel itinerary, accommodation, and ties to Nigeria, without the applicants’ full knowledge or approval.
As a result, many travellers are unable to verify or defend the information provided when questioned during immigration interviews, leading to refusals of entry.
NIDCOM urged Nigerians to exercise caution and ensure they follow official visa application procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
