Nollywood actress Damilola Oni has opened up about her experiences with online harassment, alleging that some men send her explicit messages and unsolicited nude photos/vidoes on Instagram.
The actress made this known during a recent interview on Oyinmomo TV, where she spoke about her personal life and challenges in the entertainment industry.
She said her direct messages are often flooded with inappropriate content, including sexually explicit remarks from male followers.
“Early in the morning when I open my Instagram men will send me their manhood, saying I am everything you need baby. All sorts of dicks are in my DM.
“Some will even say they watched me on TV this morning and they used me to masturbate.”
Speaking further, Oni said she is currently single, adding that the entertainment industry often rewards hype over talent.
According to her, many talented individuals struggle to gain visibility compared to those who constantly stay in the spotlight.
“I am very single, from time, the hyped ones excels more than the talented, you have to spice it up because that’s what will make you relevant. People that are supposed to excel and become famous are not the ones we hear about.”
The actress also recounted a difficult experience on a movie set, where she was reportedly removed from a lead role due to a colleague’s refusal to work with her.
She said despite waiting for hours on set, she was later offered a minor role after the producer was forced to make a decision.
“Someone told me he can never work with me and I didn’t offend the person. I was on set one day and it was a very big role and I was very happy to take that lead role.
“I was there for more than eight hours and I was like I’m supposed to be working by now as a lead role. The producer asked if I offended a certain person, I said no.
“The person said I should choose between you and him and I can’t choose you over him. The producer said he will give me another minor role like five scenes.
“I wanted to leave because I was very sad. I stayed and said I won’t leave for this person, I will play the minor role and there’s nothing the person will do and nobody can send me away from this industry.”
Despite the challenges, Oni said she remains determined to grow in the industry.
In an earlier interview, the actress had credited her background in linguistics for shaping her career and communication skills.
According to her, understanding language has helped her navigate the industry better and express herself effectively.
“Being a linguist has really helped in shaping my career. The entertainment industry is a place where you can only thrive based on your appearance and quality of work. When it comes to appearance, you can only do so much; but what you say really matters. Being a linguist helps me know what I want to say, how I want to say it, the diplomacy needed in communication, and the right level of emotion to attach to my words.”
She also emphasised her passion for promoting Yoruba culture, describing it as rich and deeply rooted.
“I believe in the promotion of Yoruba culture, because it is very rich. You can explore it all your life and still not get to the end. My passion for Yoruba culture has truly driven me and I think the world needs to see that,” she said.
On the increasing number of Nollywood films being released on YouTube, Oni said the platform provides an opportunity for actors to reach wider audiences without facing traditional industry barriers.
“Whatever career path one chooses, it is already saturated. Nigerian actors turning to YouTube to reach wider audiences is a good thing. I am happy there is a platform where I don’t need to go through rigorous processes to get my content out for the world to see.”
