Man Hacked To Death During Naming Ceremony In Lagos

A suspected cult clash turned tragic in the Orile Iganmu area of Lagos State after a man identified as Saheed, alias Emiloju, was allegedly hacked to death during a child-naming ceremony.

The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, January 14.

It was gathered that Saheed was attending the ceremony alongside some of his colleagues in the Alagba area of the community.

During the party, our correspondent learnt, some unidentified men stormed the venue, descended on him and stabbed him in the process.

A source privy to the incident, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, told our correspondent that the attack threw guests at the party into confusion and panic.

“They had finished naming the child when we saw commotion. We initially thought it was a fight until we saw Saheed in a pool of blood. That was when we discovered that it was an attack on him. This disrupted the party as the guests present fled the place,” the source said.

An anti-cultism advocacy platform, Confra Naija, in a post on Saturday, stated that Saheed was hacked with an axe.

“Saheed knew the area was not safe, so he attended with a gun, while the other two Eiye members with him were unarmed. When the Aye attackers came, they attacked Saheed from behind, causing him to fall, while the other Eiye members fled. Before Saheed could reach his gun, he was pinned down and attacked with an axe,” the post read.

He was said to have been rushed to the hospital, where he died two days later.

“The attack was brief because the fleeing Eiye members raised an alarm, causing attention and forcing the attackers to flee. Saheed was taken to the hospital and died two days later,” the post added.

The deceased’s friends, however, mourned him in a series of posts reacting to the news of his death.

Reacting, a Facebook user, Toyeeb Okanlawon, wrote, “When we were in Alagba, it was all about love and party, but it is now killing here and there. Saheed, stainless, rest in peace.”

“Saheed grew up in the same alagba and played table tennis together,” another user, Gbedeyan Temitayo, wrote.

Ahmid Ayinla, on his part, described the deceased as a good friend. “This guy used to be a very good friend when we were little,” he wrote.

When contacted on Monday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident.

She said, “The incident happened. The deceased was rushed to the hospital where he died on Saturday. Investigation is ongoing.”
