The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 38-year-old resident of Suleja, Hamisu Abdullahi, claiming he allegedly “disrupted official proceedings during Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s visit to the Emir of Suleja following Eid-el-Fitr prayers.”
The police spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, disclosed the development in a statement noting that Abdullahi was taken into custody on March 20, 2026, over allegations of attempting to disrupt government activities.
“One Hamisu Abdullahi, 38, of Suleja, was arrested and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Minna, on March 20, 2026, for suspected thuggery and attempting to disrupt government activities during the Sallah visit,” Abiodun said.
He added that the suspect has since been granted bail while investigations are ongoing.
Abdullahi’s arrest followed an incident in which he reportedly shouted “no water, no light” at the emir’s palace during the governor’s visit, drawing attention to the lack of basic amenities in the area.
Confirming his release, the suspect’s brother, Haruna Abdullahi, said he was granted bail on Tuesday evening after spending five days in detention.
Earlier on Tuesday, SaharaReporters reported that Hamisu, an electrician and father of four residing in Unguwan Bayi, Suleja, was said to have first raised the issue shortly after Eid prayers, where he reportedly complained directly about the absence of electricity and pipe-borne water.
According to family sources, the situation escalated when he again voiced the concerns during the governor’s visit to the Emir’s palace, interrupting the governor’s speech.
“At the Eid prayer ground, Hamisu was among those who shouted about the lack of basic services. He reportedly told the governor: ‘There is no electricity and no pipe-borne water in Suleja,’” a source said.
The governor, according to the sources, responded by explaining that electricity supply falls under the purview of distribution companies rather than the state government.
However, the incident reportedly took a further turn when Abdullahi was identified and asked to step forward during the palace visit.
Sources alleged that Governor Bago told him he would be taught “a lesson on how to approach leaders,” after which he was taken into custody and transported to Minna.
Earlier reports had indicated that the arrest followed a directive from the governor after the public outburst during the Eid celebrations.
The police, however, maintain that the arrest was based on allegations of disorderly conduct and disruption of official activities, with investigations still in progress.
Clean Water and electricity remain a challenge for many residents in Niger State with Suleja included.
