The Presidency has dismissed as false a viral social media post attributed to U.S. President, Donald Trump, which criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the recent bombings in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The post, widely circulated online, claimed Nigeria was witnessing āmassive, coordinated suicide bombingsā while Tinubu was away on an official visit to the United Kingdom, accusing him of neglecting national security.
Reacting, the Presidentās Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the message as fabricated and misleading, warning Nigerians against falling for disinformation.
āEnemies of Nigeria are always at work, always ready to fabricate anything,ā Onanuga said, stressing that the statement credited to Trump did not originate from the former U.S. leader.
The Presidencyās response follows deadly attacks in Maiduguri that reportedly left at least 23 people dead and several others injured, heightening public concern over security in the North-East.
In the fake post, the author alleged a breakdown of leadership, claiming critical infrastructure including a hospital and market had been hit, while also calling for Tinubu to cut short his trip abroad.
However, Onanuga urged Nigerians to rely on verified sources of information, noting that the government remains actively engaged in addressing security challenges and safeguarding lives across the country.
