LG Autonomy: Gov Makinde Dares Tinubu As Oyo LG Chairmen Secede From ALGON

Not satisfied with the decision of the Supreme Court judgement on LG autonomy, ‘Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo State, has asked local government chairmen in the state to break away from their umbrella body— Association of Local Government of Nigeria, ALGON.

It will be recalled that the attorney general of the federation and minister of justice, Lateef Fagbemi SAN, had taken the matter to court to release hold on council areas by governors, an action that has not caused underdevelopment but untold hardship to the people at the grassroots.

The highest court in the land had ruled that financial autonomy be given to the council chairmen across the country and that allocation be directly sent to the respective council areas.

The Supreme Court’s decision explicitly stated that state governments lack the authority to manage federal allocations on behalf of local governments, a practice deemed unconstitutional by the court.

Not minding the consequence of their actions, all the chairman in a statement by their boss, Sikiru Sanda, two-term chairman of Egbeda local government and former state assembly member, who spoke on their behalf declared their total support for anything the governor does in the matter.

Their reason is what they described as the governor’s “exemplary leadership and unrivaled achievements since his assumption of office.”

After a closed-door Saturday night, the council bosses unanimously agreed to establish a new association to continue serving the people of the state at the grassroots.

  1. This is just a camouflage, as long as the allocations would be coming to the local govt. Directly, that does not change the status quo. Let chairmen resign their appointment if they are not satisfied with the supreme court judgement.
