The Lagos State Government has sealed an undisclosed number of public toilets in the Lagos Island area of the state over offensive odour.
The stateβs Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the Sunday action followed complaints received from the public over the environmental infractions.
βThe Lagos State Wastewater Management Office on Sunday sealed off public toilets in the Offin, Balogun, Oke-Arin and No. 14 Adeniji Adele Road (Olukolu Place) areas of Lagos Island sequel to public complaints received from some concerned residents who have been impacted by the recurring offensive odour emanating from the activities of the public toilets.
βThis act is an infringement under the stateβs environmental laws, leading to the recorded waterborne diseases that negatively impact the citizensβ health.
βThe agency will continue to clamp down on facilities carrying out such unlawful acts of degradation of the environment,β the commissioner wrote on X.
He encouraged residents to regularly evacuate their septic tanks and soakaway pits, warning that the state government had zero tolerance for indiscriminate discharge of untreated wastewater into the environment.
