The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has congratulated Captain Kelechi Ndukwe, a Nigerian-American officer, on his elevation to Commodore in the United States Navy.
Ndukwe, who will now serve as Commodore, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 60, and Commander, Task Force (CTF) 65, is based in Rota, Spain, where he will oversee U.S. Navy destroyer operations across Europe, Africa, and the Mediterranean.
In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja by its spokesman, Gabriel Odu, NIDCOM described the promotion as a source of pride for Nigeria, the international naval community, and Nigerians in the diaspora.
“This outstanding accomplishment makes Nigeria, the international naval community, and Nigerians living abroad proud,” the Commission said.
NIDCOM said Ndukwe had earlier made history in April 2021 when he became the first Nigerian-American to command a U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer, the USS Halsey (DDG-97).
The commission, led by Abike Dabiri-Erewa, stated the Ndukwe’s rise reflects resilience, discipline, and excellence.
NIDCOM reiterated its commitment to supporting Nigerians in the diaspora who continue to excel globally.
“The promotion of Commodore Ndukwe symbolises the diaspora community’s beneficial influence and the boundless potential of Nigerians around the world,” the statement added.
NIDCOM extended its “warm congratulations” to Ndukwe, praising his professionalism and leadership in advancing global maritime security.
